With the transition to cloud data centers as the new unit of computing and an exponential growth in data that must be moved between server processors, including CPUs and GPUs, Xockets’ founder could foresee that these big data flows would bottleneck server processors in delivering distributed computing services to customers and would stand in the way of achieving the computing speeds and power efficiencies needed to make machine learning/artificial intelligence widely available and affordable in cloud data centers. To address this problem, Xockets’ DPU technology extends computing intelligence into the network of a cloud data center for offloading, accelerating, and isolating the processing of these data-intensive workloads with the versatility, programmability, and independence clouds demand for injecting their own DNA into a cloud network fabric. 

Xockets Innovations

Xockets’ DPU technology includes new virtual switch computing and switching plane architectures that can dynamically connect together a set of heterogeneous hardware accelerators into programmable logic pipelines for executing computing operations on data at line rate—the speed of the network— with the versatility, programmability, and independence from server processors that clouds demand, including for offloading a cloud’s data plane and/or control plane. The data stream itself is used by Xockets to define the programmable logic pipelines of hardware accelerators to be formed in flight in the cloud network, for data-centric computing instead of the more complex application-centric computing of conventional computing architectures in server processors.

Xockets’ virtual switch computing and switching plane architectures for offloading, accelerating, and isolating data-intensive workloads went against the conventional wisdom, which threw more hardware at these problems under control of server processors and bound by the speed limitations and power inefficiencies of conventional computing architectures. Such conventional approaches persisted for years until Xockets’ DPU inventions were revealed and included adding more server processors as well as SmartNICs and FPGAs purpose-built for a specific offload task that lacked the versatility, programmability, and independence for cloud offload. Xockets’ DPU technology enables the accelerated computing speeds and power efficiencies in cloud data centers that are needed to make AI widely available and affordable to businesses in every industry.
